Kindergarten 2026

Kindergarten is an amazing time at Young North. Our highly skilled InitiaLit trained teachers, extended transition program, year 6 buddy for the year initiative and strong links with neighbouring preschools makes your child’s start a smooth and enjoyable one.

When starting school students engage in 4 weeks of PreLit to establish warm up routines and identify pre literacy skills. This systematic, skills-based program lays a sound foundation for children to learn to read. Teachers then move on to implementing the InitiaLit program which runs across the four terms. This program offers an explicit and effective model for teaching reading and related skills to children in their first year of school in a fun and engaging way.

Kindergarten students also access mathematical lessons, where staff take a ‘connectionist’ approach that reflects the ‘big ideas’ of mathematics in the early years of school. These mathematical programs highlight and reinforce the role of working mathematically and the importance of student reasoning. Students are provided with multiple opportunities to engage in rich mathematical tasks that include hands on manipulatives, opportunities for assessment and differentiation.
